SLC was compelled to make such a request to ACC because Sri Lanka was incapacitated to host the tournament. The reason behind this is the economic situation of Sri Lanka which has got from bad to worse in the last few weeks. The situation was so broken that the people were directly entering the president’s house to protest. It would not be practical and safe to go on with the tournament in such conditions. Therefore, the SLC requested the ACC to shift the tournament to UAE.

Even after moving the Asia Cup 2022 to UAE, the Asian Cricket Council made it clear that Sri Lanka will continue to retain hosting rights and they would get the host’s share of revenue from the total revenue of the Asia Cup.

The Asian Cricket Council (ACC) gave the following statement:-

“Considering the prevailing situation in Sri Lanka, the ACC, after extensive deliberation, has unanimously concluded that it would be appropriate to relocate the tournament from Sri Lanka to the UAE. Every effort was made to host the Asia Cup in Sri Lanka, and the decision to shift the venue to the UAE was taken after much deliberation. The UAE will be the new venue while Sri Lanka will continue to retain hosting rights.”
