The exclusion of Sanju Samson from the squad reflects the strategic decisions made by the selection committee. Samson, while talented, has struggled to consistently perform at the international level. This decision underscores the team’s commitment to fielding players in top form, ensuring optimal contributions.

The reason behind his omission is that he failed to perform when he got the opportunities. Tilak Varma has been selected ahead of him because he made best out of the chances given to him. Samson is a middle order batsman and the middle order of India Playing 11 is already set. Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav and Shreyas Iyer are the regular starters of Indian team. Even if Samson was selected in India’s main Squad for ODI World Cup 2023, then also he will not get a chance to feature in the playing 11.

Ishan Kishan is the player who has beaten the likes of Samson. The MI batsman has been included in the team as second wicketkeeper. Another advantage of choosing Ishan was that he can open too and can act as a second opener.

Why Sanju Samson was not selected in India’s squad for Asia Cup?

Sanju Samson didn’t get a place in the Indian squad for upcoming Asia Cup due to his inconsistent performances for team India. There is no doubt in the fact that Samson is an outstanding hitter of the ball but it is also true that he has failed to perform in blue jersey. Unlike him, Deepak Hooda made the best out of his opportunity and get a place in the squad for Asia Cup.

There were rumors that Sanju Samson has been asked by selectors to stay in UAE. However these all were mere speculations and no such call has been made. There has been only a single change in the India’s T20 squad. Shardul Thakur has replaced Axar Patel in the 15-member squad. The T20 World Cup will start from October 17 and will end on November 14. Rajasthan Royals captain Sanju Samson failed to take his team into the playoffs but he surely drew some applauds and appreciation for his exceptional batting.

Mumbai Indians star youngster Ishan Kishan has piped Sanju Samson for the second wicketkeeper’s slot in the 15-member squad. Sanju was far behind the likes of players like Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer. Samson has repeatedly fell short of expectations. Therefore, the risk of bringing him back for the mega T20 event doesn’t look viable. There has been fierce competition for batting slots and in that aspect, Samson, over the last year or so, has done his chances more harm than good. Sanju Samson not in T20 World Cup Squad for World Cup is a disappointing news for his fans and well wishers.

Why Sanju Samson was not selected in India’s T20 World Cup 2021 squad?

The simple reason behind the non-selection of Sanju Samson in India’s T20 World Cup 2022 squad is that the RR captain has failed to grab his opportunities. With the availability of elite class players like Rishabh Pant, Ishan Kishan and KL Rahul as keepers, it became more difficult for him to get a place in the 15-member squad.

“No 1 is Rishabh Pant and No 2 is Ishan Kishan, are the two keepers. KL Rahul has been chosen as the genuine opener and he will keep wickets only if there is a real need for that.” said the chief selector.

Sanju delivered a poor performance in Sri Lanka in the three-match T20I series which resulted in giving more benefit to Ishan Kishan. Sanju was dropped from the Indian T20 team after the tour of Australia but he forced his his way back into the squad after giving a worth performance for Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2021. Another reason behind his selection in the squad was that majority of first team players were away in England for the Test series. But again he failed to deliver up to his expectations. He managed to score just 34 runs from three innings with a best of 27. His poor performance for team India is the reason why Sanju Samson T20 world cup career did not start.

Samson’s fanbase has been built on his IPL career but his natural ability has been absent more often than not whenever he’s donned the India kit. There is no doubt that Sanju Samson is a talented player but he need to find his form when he wears the Indian jersey. He might be a tremendous player in the IPL but there will always be a difference between domestic cricket and international cricket, and it’s one Samson is yet to leap across.

Sanju scored 342 runs in IPL 2019 and then followed it up with 375 runs in the IPL 2020. Sanju will captain his franchise Rajasthan Royals in the IPL 2021 and he will be eager to get back into the Indian squad again.

In a session with Barbados Royals Skipper Jason Holder, Rajasthan Royals Captain Sanju Samson discusses with him about his non-selection and criticism issue.

“First of all, when you’re playing for an IPL team and thinking about Indian selection, then it’s a wrong mindset. People do talk a lot about Indian selection and cementing your place but that is actually a by-product – if you perform, you get opportunities,” Samson states.
