BCCI announced the Indian Cricket Team squad for World Cup 2023 which is scheduled to begin in India. Rohit Sharma has been named captain of India’s 15-member squad for the World Cup. Washington Sundar has failed to get a place in Indian Squad for World Cup 2023. Fans are quite upset with his omission and want to know the reason as to Why Washington Sundar is not selected in India’s Squad for World Cup 2023?
India’s World Cup 2023 Squad
Rohit Sharma (c), Hardik Pandya (vc), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Ravindra Jadeja, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Shami, Axar Patel, Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav.
The off-spin all-rounder has not been included in the World Cup squad because two spin all-rounders have already been included in the 15-member squad. Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel have already been named in the squad. Besides that, Sundar was not even in the contention list for selectors because he has not been a part of team India for a long time. Sundar was included in the team for the series against Zimbabwe but he got injured again.
Washington Sundar has already shown the early signs of the things to come. Sundar can follow the footsteps of his state teammate, Ravichandran Ashwin and can lead the Indian spin department in the future. Sundar is very efficient with new-ball in his hand. In 20 T20Is, he has picked 18 wickets at a stunning economy rate of 6.8.

Washington Sundar was a confirmed choice in the squad after his economical bowling performances with RCB in the first phase of IPL 2021. The reason behind Sundar’s non-selection is his finger injury which has already ruled him out of the Indian Premier League (IPL). It would be a risky to predict whether he recovers in time for the T20 World Cup. Even if he does, it would not be sensible to pick a player who has not played a game for almost six months. Therefore the selectors decided to not pick him. Sundar’s injury was a severe headache in terms of picking an off-spinner for the selectors. Therefore, the selectors went with Ravichandran Ashwin, no other name comes to mind in terms of off-spinner.
