Egypt made it to the FIFA World Cup four years ago. They qualified in 2018 WC after a wait of 30 years. The failure to qualify is quite disheartening for Egyptian fans and especially for Salah’s fans as they will not be able to see him playing in the biggest tournament. Egypt is a member of Confederation of African Football (CAF). The format used by CAF for its FIFA World Cup qualification is quite different from other federations. The whole qualification process was done in three rounds. In the third round, the final ten teams had to play home-and-away over two legs. The five winners who emerged from the third round will be qualified for the World Cup.
In that manner, Senegal and Egypt were drawn against each other. Egypt won the first leg with the score for 1-0. In the second leg, Senegal scored the only goal and the game went to extra time. After a tense game, Senegal won 3–1 on penalties and Egypt failed to qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
