On Wednesday, 8 September Indian Cricket Team announced their 15-member squad for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021, with MS Dhoni being announced as team mentor. The squad list was quiet surprising for cricket fans as some regular players were failed to find a spot in the team. Players like Shikhar Dhawan and Yuzvendra Chahal were the biggest omissions from the T20 World Cup squad. Apart from them, the absence of former captain of Delhi Capitals from the squad was also shocking. Shreyas Iyer, who will return to competitive cricket in the second phase of IPL 2021, has been picked as the reserve for T20 World Cup. He did not make it to the final 15 member squad for the T20 World cup 2021. See why Shreyas Iyer is not selected in India’s T20 World Cup 2021 Squad.
The non-selection of Shreyas Iyer in the 15-member squad is surprising because he has been India’s designated number four in ODI international for the last two years and he has done well at that position. He was in an amazing form in the home series against England this year and it was almost confirmed that he will be the first choice for India’s number four in the T20 World cup next month. Shreyas Iyer is not in the initial 15-man squad, he is one of the stand-by players.
India T20 World Cup 2021 Squad
Virat Kohli (Captain), Rohit Sharma (Vice-Captain), KL Rahul, Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant (wk), Ishan Kishan (wk), Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Rahul Chahar, Ravichandran Ashwin, Axar Patel, Varun Chakravarthy, Jasprit Bumrah, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Mohammad Shami
Standby players – Shreyas Iyer, Shardul Thakur, Deepak Chahar.
Why Shreyas Iyer is not selected in India’s T20 World Cup 2021 Squad?
The reason behind Iyer’s non-selection in India’s 15-member squad is his shoulder injury and long break from cricket. He had suffered a shoulder injury while fielding against England during the first ODI in March this year. For that he underwent surgery and because of the rehabilitation process and recovery, hasn’t played competitive cricket for almost five months. Shreyas will now return in the second phase of the IPL 2021.
Due to his shoulder injury, Iyer had to miss almost six months of action and had undergone surgery as well. In his absence, Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan were given the opportunities and they made best out of it. SKY has been chosen as the No.4 batsman in the team instead of Shreyas Iyer whereas Ishan Kishan also found a place in the squad as backup opener. Both Kishan and Suryakumar are more versatile options than Iyer.
Shreyas Iyer’s overall record for India in limited-overs format has been superb until now and his place in the T20 World cup squad was also confirmed until he suffered that injury. Iyer has been consistent at number four for India. He has scored 550 runs in 29 T20 innings so far at an average of just under 29. He has three fifties in his name and showed that he can play under pressure.
Shreyas Iyer’s record in UAE is also stunning. He was at fourth spot in the race for the orange cap in IPL 2020. He can play in the middle order as well as he is one of the best hitters of spin in the country which might be of great use in UAE. The right-hander’s experience in UAE should have been considered and he should have been selected for the T20 World cup.
