Ahead of the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 in October, the Indian Cricket Team is set to play Asia Cup and a number of Twenty-20 series against international opponents. BCCI announced its squad for the upcoming Asia Cup. A total of 15 players have been selected in the team. Why Shubman Gill is not in India’s T20 World Cup 2021 Squad?
KKR opener Shubman Gill’s exclusion from India’s T20 World Cup 2021 squad is not at all shocking. Gill was not even on the contention list for selectors. He was far behind the likes of Shikhar Dhawan and Prithvi Shaw. Both openers of Delhi Capitals failed to get into the squad, so there was no chance for Shubman Gill’s selection.
The KKR batsman is a future star of Indian cricket but he has not been so impressive in the shortest format of cricket. In five matches of IPL 2021, the Punjab cricketer managed to score only 80 runs at an all-time low average of 16.00.
Gill is a long term investment for BCCI and the future of Indian team. But with the T20 World Cup just round the corner, the selectors cannot make any changes with the existing batting order. It would have been foolish to do the experiment of taking an uncapped player at World Cup. However, it is sure that he will soon get a chance in the upcoming matches and will make his T20 debut for India.
There is no doubt that Gill has immense talent and plays with technique. But it is also true that Gill is not a natural hitter of the ball and finds it difficult to smash boundaries at will. The youngster mainly relies on finding gaps rather than power hitting.

Shubman Gill was handed his Test debut against Australia in 2020 in Melbourne. He played an integral role in their Test series victory. The 21-year-old showcased a fearless batting against the Aussies and scored 45 runs off 65 deliveries on the second day of the Boxing Day Test, before getting dismissed by Pat Cummins.
ODI Debut
Shubman Gill made his One Day International (ODI) debut for the Indian Cricket Team against New Zealand at Seddon Park in Hamilton on January 31, 2019. In his debut match, he scored just 9 runs and in his second match, he scored only 7 runs off 11 balls.
IPL Debut
In IPL 2018 players auction, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) bagged him for Rs 1.8 crore. Shubman Gill made his Indian Premier League debut against Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Eden Gardens on April 14, 2018.
Shubman Gill has not debuted for the Indian Cricket Team in T20 format. He might have to wait for a little because there has been a huge competition for the opening spot in the Indian team.
